Why Microfinance Is Declining

The microfinance industry has been one of the most effective means of alleviating the lives of the poor and less privileged in the society. The industry has helped people with potential but without the required resources to start business everywhere in the world. It has also helped people with small business to expand and create more wealth. Through low interest loans, microfinance institutions have helped the world’s poor to get out of poverty and build more satisfying lives. Though most microfinance institutions such as HOPE International believe that the way to alleviating poverty is through empowering the poor, some organizations however have curtailed efforts to improve the lives of the poor by performing greedy activities. According to Hopes International’s Jeff Rutt, the microfinance industry is declining because of the following reasons.

The microfinance industry has been rapidly and consistently growing since the year 1998. However recent years have seen a decline in this growth rate with the number of clients being served by microfinance institutions falling to 195 million up from 205 million. The decline has most been felt in India and it can be attributed to several factors.

One of the factors that have led to the decline in the robust growth of the microfinance industry is the adoption of greedy practices by some of the microfinance institutions. The loans that microfinance institutions lend come from non-profit organizations all around the world and are meant to serve the sole purpose of helping the poor get out of poverty. But some microfinance institutions have been using these funds for other purposes; to enrich themselves by using these funds to increase their wealth. This has caused non-profit organizations to stop funding them. Individuals are also loosing trust in microfinance institutions. Some microfinance institutions lend money at high rates of interest and use harsh methods of collecting the loan payments. They also lend people loans of huge amounts such that clients are unable to repay the loans. This has created fear in the prospective clients and the existing clients are gradually withdrawing their clientele.  Such commercialization of loans is the main reason for the decline of the microfinance industry.

The microfinance institutions have had a bad image in the recent past. This is attributable to the negative image of the institutions as portrayed by the press. Some governments have taken measures to restrict micro lending due to the increase in the number of suicides by loan lenders. The managers of some institutions are acting in the best of their interest rather than in the best interest of the poor. According to Jeff Rutt, micro lending is an essential way of helping and empowering the poor and it’s the role of every player and stake holder to preserve the reputation of the industry.
